Famco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The White Plains Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Famco-compatible chimney caps across White Plains, with most replacements running $280-$520 installed depending on flue size and whether your crown needs repair before the cap goes on. If you call before noon, we can usually inspect and fit the cap the same day. Most White Plains homeowners discover the problem during a hard rain, when water starts hitting the firebox floor, or when they spot rust streaks running down the brick from a cap that’s been slowly failing for two or three seasons.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco builds chimney caps in galvanized, stainless steel, and copper across several product lines, and the right match depends on your flue configuration, not just the brand name on the box. We see the Galvanized Draft King and Stainless Steel Draft King series most often in White Plains homes built between 1960 and 1990, usually with 8″ x 8″, 8″ x 12″, or 13″ x 13″ flue openings. The Famco Wind Directional Cap turns up on taller chimneys in the Gedney Farm area, where the elevation catches more wind off the Kensico Reservoir.

To identify your cap, check the stamped model number on the underside of the lid or measure the flue’s outside dimensions, not the crown. Here’s where owners get tripped up: Famco’s galvanized caps look identical to their stainless line from the ground, but the galvanized units start rusting through in 5-7 years in Westchester’s freeze-thaw cycles. The stainless models run 15-20 years. We carry both OEM Famco caps and Copperfield stainless equivalents that match the bolt pattern exactly. The Copperfield equivalent saves roughly $40-$60 on the part and carries the same 90-Day Done Right Promise on our labor. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Famco.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust stains on the brickwork below the cap. Famco galvanized caps develop pinhole corrosion first at the lid seams, where condensation collects overnight. Once you see orange streaking, the metal is thin enough that the next heavy storm will push water straight through.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. This means the cap’s screen or lid has separated from the base, or the storm collar has cracked. In White Plains, we see this most often after ice buildup in late February, when expanding frozen water warps the cap skirt.
  • Debris or bird nesting material on the smoke shelf. A Famco cap with intact mesh keeps animals out. If you’re finding twigs or hearing scratching, the screen has either corroded away or pulled free from its spot welds.
  • Downdraft smoke spillage on windy days. The Wind Directional series uses a rotating hood that seizes when bearings corrode. Once frozen, it blocks proper exhaust and pushes smoke back into the room.
  • The cap is visibly tilted or missing entirely. High wind events, common along the I-287 corridor, can snap Famco’s lighter galvanized mounting brackets. A tilted cap funnels water directly into the flue instead of shedding it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Famco stainless cap, standard flue (8″ x 8″ to 13″ x 13″) $280 - $380
Famco or Copperfield equivalent, oversized or multi-flue $340 - $520
Crown repair or resurfacing (needed before cap install) $180 - $340 additional
Level-2 camera inspection with photo report Included with install

What drives the range: flue size, whether we need to fabricate a custom storm collar for an irregular crown, and the condition of the existing crown. We inspect with a camera before quoting, so you see what we see. The price we quote is the price on the invoice. Every cap installation carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check whether your cap is loose by sighting up from the yard with binoculars, or by tapping the flue tile inside the firebox to confirm it’s dry after rain. Do not climb the roof. Chimney work at height on a pitched roof is genuinely dangerous, and a Famco cap replacement requires proper ladder placement on often-rotted fascia, working near a live flue that may still be hot, and sealing the storm collar with high-temp silicone that bonds correctly only on a clean, dry surface.

We’ve rescued more than a few DIY jobs in White Plains where the owner bought the right cap but mounted it crooked, or used standard caulk that failed in the first freeze. Our technicians carry the correct Famco or Copperfield cap on the truck, along with the stainless fasteners and high-temp sealant that the job actually requires. Most installs take under 90 minutes. Call (914) 603-1360 and we’ll confirm fit over the phone before we roll.
